Thankfully, father likely learned the rather basic protocol for handling the spiritual aspect of this in the confessional (provided he wasn’t the one who engineered it in the poor penitent to begin with!); but the psychological havoc this wreaks on some can be quite pitiful to watch run its course. They can come out of it, but it usually takes a long, painful time.

This gave me a much needed chuckle. I suspect the sin if any was to doubt the mercy of God. I can relate.
